A SITE TO SEE FOR MOUNTAIN EXPLORATION, HISTORY, AND CLIMBING CONTROVERSIES;
Also for High Altitude Physiology, Atmospheric Physics, and Other Science Issues–
-Dedicated to the Majesty of Mount Everest and to Solving the Mallory-Irvine Mystery
The principal stated purpose of this website is to solve the mystery of Mallory and Irvine, and all other postings are subordinate to this purpose. Therefore it is important to stay on track with it, and not veer away too far or too long on other issues, however intriguing they may be in other contexts. With our collective mountaineering and scientific brains, we may in this manner yet hope, in these centennial years, to generate a solution. By this it is meant that we may assemble information, form hypotheses, propose research techniques, and suggest items to be found on the upper slopes of Mt. Everest and specific places to seek them. But no amount of armchair science can yield actual results: discovery can only occur on site, accomplished by real mountaineers and scientists working diligently and in cooperation under specific guidelines for exploration. I believe this is the best approach to success, though I suspect that most of the details will have to be worked out by others more knowledgeable than myself in the practical necessities of the expeditions. I therefore encourage a group effort, and welcome comments posted on all relevant site pages, including: https://cywelsian.wordpress.com/2021/08/21/mallory-meta-analysis/

I approach the Mallory problem through a three-fold division of scenarios:
1) Mallory &Irvine definitely did not reach the summit, and climbed no higher than the base of the second Step.
2) Mallory & Irvine successfully climbed the second or third Step, and gained thereby a chance to reach the summit.
3) Mallory & Irvine definitely climbed beyond the Steps and reached the summit.
In this approach I do not declare any scenario to be correct (or incorrect), but wish only to evaluate the merits of all the variant possibilities. The aim is not to propose a preference, or to suggest which is ‘most likely’, but to elucidate the specific course of events which would have led to the fulfilment of each respective possibility. In this manner, I believe we may then, from such a database, begin to propose specific searches for specific traces whose discovery would validate or invalidate the particular scenario in question. In other words, we must strive to make informed proposals for the precise conduct of future expeditions. This will help eliminate redundancies and save time, effort, and funds –all in limited supply– throughout the exploration process, and will, hopefully, lead to a greater certainty of success –success in discovering the true story of Mallory and Irvine on June 8, 1924. –S.I. Something occurred to me recently, something about the Second Step, and the embattled attempts to prove that M&I might have climbed it. Those like myself who believe that M&I (or at least Mallory) most likely reached the summit by a traverse of the North Face have sound reasons for thinking so. But any ¨planned route¨ can beContinue reading “SECOND STEP REVISION”
